The First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili stated that 36 years after April 9th, when the modern world presents new challenges, the ideals of the Georgian nation – the country’s independence and unity, the building of a politically and economically strong Georgia – remain unchanged, and the same unity is needed in this endeavor as the society showed on April 9th, 1989.

“April 9th is a special, most important date for each of us, for every citizen of Georgia – a day when love for the homeland and the aspiration for independence united the entire country, all generations, in the fight against the Soviet system. Today, we pay tribute to the memory of those who died on April 9th; these people sacrificed their lives for their homeland, for a better, free life for future generations,” – the First Vice Prime Minister said.

According to Davitashvili, the self-sacrifice of those who died on April 9th has already become a legend, a symbol of courage, and was forever inscribed in the history of Georgia.

“The main thing is that the sacrifice of these people was not in vain and became a stimulus, a new breath, for the struggle for independence, which finally, two years later, on April 9th, 1991, culminated in the restoration of Georgia’s independence. Once again, a big thank you to them for their heroism and self-sacrifice, for the achievement that is called free Georgia,” – Levan Davitashvili noted.
